Account of the attack on Stradler's Fort.
From HISTORY OF THE EARLY SETTLEMENT AND INDIAN WARS OF
WESTERN VIRGINIA
by Wills DeHass 1851
In the fall of this year (1779) ... a much larger party of Indians make their way to Coburn's creek, and attacked a company of whites returning from a field in the neighborhood of Coburn's fort. John Woodfin and Jacob Miller were both killed and scalped.
They next made their appearance on Dunker creek, near to Stradler's fort. Here as on Coburn creek, they lay in ambush on the road side, awaiting the return of the men who were engaged at work in some of the neighboring fields. Towards evening the men came, carrying with them some hogs which they had killed for the use of the fort people, and on approaching where the Indians lay concealed, were fired upon and several fell. Those who escaped injury from the first fire, returned the shot, and a severe action ensued. But so many of the whites had been killed before the savages exposed themselves to view, that the remainder were unable long to sustain the unequal contest. Overpowered by numbers, the few who were still unhurt, fled precipitateley to the fort, leaving eighteen of their companions dead in the road. These were scalped and mangled by the Indians in a most shocking manner, and lay some time before the men in the fort, assured of the departure of the enemy, went out and buried them.
Weakened by the severe loss sustained in this bloody skirmish, had the Indians pushed forward to attack the fort, in all human probability, it would have fallen before them.
From the History of the Mittong Family
"according to tradition, the body of Jacob Statler who was killed on this occasion was buried near the state line. A few years ago his bones were exposed, caused by erosion in the soil. The citizens living in this neighborhood had them recoffined and re-interred with honors of war in the presence of a large assemblage of patriots who marched to the tunes of martial music, with flags flying, in all the pomp and glory suitable for such occasion."
We can see from the above account that the Statlers suffered a great deal from Indian raids, three of them, John, Joseph, and Jacob, having been killed and scalped by these Savages. Tradition as given by the oldest living members of this family says that Jacob was the ancestor of the Statlers who are connected with the Wilson family.
Jacob Statler had a son John. John was born May 4, 1733, and died February 22, 1826. He married Eve (?). Family tradition says that Eve's maiden name was Roberts. This was confirmed by John's grandson, John, who died March 13, 1926.
A deed on record in the courthouse at Morgantown, W. Va., dated November 9, 1833, gives the heirs of John Statler as follows:
Levi Anderson and his wife, Sarah; David Wright and his wife, Susan; John Delester and his wife, Castilda; and Jacob Statler and son of John and Eve Statler, was born June 30, 1805, and died November 20, 1873. He was married on October 5, 1826, to Elizabeth Walker who was born March 2, 1802, and died April 11, 1874. Following are the children of Jacob and Elizabeth (nee Walker) Statler:
(end of page 2)
Susanna, born August 21, 1830, died Dec. 16, 1888;
Sarah, born Sept. 25, 1832, died about 1897;
Plezzy Ann, born April 27, 1835, died about 1884;

Susanna married George R. Wilson. Sarah married Azaria Mayfield. Plezzy Ann married Marion Riggs. Catherine married William S. Glascock who was born August 5, 1826, and died August 19, 1915. John was married on May 19, 1864, to Anna Moore who was born June 30, 1844, and died August 23, 1916. Harry S. Glasscock of near Rievesville, W. Va., is a son of William S. and Catherine (nee Statler) Glasscock. Mrs. Marguerite Virginia Kennedy, of Lowewville, W. Va., is a daughter of Azaria and Sarah (nee Statler) Mayfield. E. D. Statler, of Jewett, Ohio; Newton Statler, of Cassville, W. Va., and Jacob Statler, of Coretown, W. Va., are sons of John and Anna (nee Moore) Statler. It was John's great-grandfather, Jacob, who was scalped by Indians in 1778. Jacob's son, John, married a Roberts.

My greatgrandmother was Barbara Strottler (Statler). She was born 10 Aug. 1808 in Penn. and died 8 or 9 Aug 1883 near Aledo, Illinois. She married 2 Feb 1828 or 1830 Hiram A. Robbins in Brown County, Ohio.
ED. NOTE; Barbara is the daughter of Joseph Stotler of Brown County and his first wife.
According to the 1938 family history taken from material collected by Edwin Stotler the children of Joseph's first marriage were:
Alexander born March 14, 1799. He lived in Highland County, Ohio, where his first wife, Jane Morrison, died. He married his second wife, Ellen (or Eleanor) Husrt and moved to Williamson County, Ill., where he lived on a farm south of Herrin, Ill. He died April 13, 1852.
James Stotler, second son of Joseph Stotler, moved from Ohio to Mercer County, Ill., Later moved to Iowa.
John Stotler went to Mercer County, Ill., with his brother James. He was crippled from boyhood.
Elizabeth Stotler went with James to Illinois and married (?) McIntier. They settled on a farm west of Peoria, Ill. She raised Jane Stotler Sterns, daughter of Uncle Alexander and wife of Thos. Sterns.
Barbara Stotler went to Mercer County, Ill., with James and John. She married Hiram Robbins. Both are buried in Condor Cemetery, 4 miles from Seton.
Samuel Stotler born Nov. 12 1813, fourth son of Joseph Stotler. Married first wife, Mary Mahaffey. One child, Elizabeth, died when about 1 1/2 years of age. First wife died July 22, 1837. Samuel then married Elizabeth Parsons, daughter of Zeruah and Thomas Parsons, April 18, 1839. He lived on a farm near Buford, Highland County, Ohio. Sold it and moved to Williamson County, Ill. Nov. 1856

The first name of my surname in Bedford County was John Samuel Statler who came to Bedford County from Franklin County sometime in the 1820's. John Samuel Statler was born about 1800 and died in 1862. He married Louisa Ann Graham 8 June 1819.
ED. NOTE; The father of John Samuel was the son of Lieutenant-Colonel Samuel Statler who died in 1804 at about 44 years old. Orphan Court Records of 1809 list Samuel's widow as Mary and Children John and Samuel as over 14 years old, and Emanuel, Jacob, Henry and Jonathan as under 14 years old. There was not enough money in the estate to cover the debts and the records mention property in Greencastle (Franklin County) and in Somerset County that would be sold. Later Orphan Court Record (1810) list the sale of the Greencastle property to Margaret Keller for $19.00.
John and Emanuel are in the 1850 census in Bedford County and Henry and Jonathan are in the 1850 census in Somerset County.

RESEARCH AID
When an ancestor was a veteran of a war before World War I there may be valuable information about him and his family in the National Archives.
Sometimes when making application for a pension copies of the pages of a family Bible would be submitted as proof of marriage. Places of residence can be listed. Sometimes a physical description adds interesting insight to a person.
For the form necessary to order veterans records write to;
Reference Services Branch (NNIR)
National Archives and Records Service
8th and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20408
Ask for NATF Form 80
The information is searched for and copies are made after you submit the form. No payment is made until you are notified that the information is available. The processing of the orders takes a minimum of 8-10 weeks.
TYPES OF RECORDS AVAILABLE
(Quotes from the form's instructions)
"Pension Application Files based on Federal (not State) service before World War I. Pension files usually include an official statement of the veteran's military service, as well as information of a personal nature."
"Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files based on Federal (not State) service before 1856. Documents in a bounty-land warrant application file are similar to those in a pension application file. In addition, these files usually give the veteran's age and place of residence at the time the application was made."
Military Service Records for the various branches of the United States military. "Military service records rarely contain family information. Pension application files generally are most useful to persons doing genealogical research and contain the most complete information regarding a man's military career. We therefore suggest that you first request copies of a man's pension military record only when no pension file exists. For Revolutionary War service, bounty-land warrant applications are interfiled among or consolidated with pension application papers (request pension only)"
