FROM THE EDITOR

The research I have been doing is offering mostly clues to places that need further research. A link has been made in group 10 between the James Statler/Stateler family of Berrien County Michigan and the John Statler family of Winnebago County, Wisconsin. (See the Query section).

I also received some information from Rebecca Wilkins, on a Jacob Statler in Berrien County, Michigan who appears to be a member of Group 6. Jacob and family had come to Berrien Spring in 1835 from Franklin County, Pennsylvania, with his brothers-in-laws Josiah and Tobias Whetstone and also the Whetsone's sister Eliza and John G. Shultz, George Shell and Adam Small.

I found this family in the 1880 Soundex in Niles City, Berrien County, Michagan.

Statler, Jacob age 79 born in Pennsylvania
"    Mary A wife 65 "
Alace dau. 23 Indiana
Ryan, Nariah dau. 31 Michigan
"       Eddie g.s. 7 "
Frank g.s. 5 "

I also have a small link between Group 6 from Franklin County, Pennsylvania and Group 7 in Washington County, Maryland. Jacob Stotler of Franklin County left a will in 1790 naming children; Emanuel, Henry, John, Jacob, Elizabeth, Martha, and Mary. His wife was Nancy, daughter of Henry Sites. In the 1790 census for Franklin County lists no Jacob or Nancy Stotler/Statler but does list a Ann Statler with the correct number of males under 16. This Nancy Stotler moved her family to Allegany County and in the 1800 census index appears as Agnes Stotler. So I thought her name was Anna Nancy and like others of German descent she used her middle name for the most part.

Now from the Records of Baptism of the Zion Reformed Church in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland is the following:

Emanuel born 20 Oct. 1776 bapt. 21 Apr.1799, parents Jacob Stadler and Anna; witnesses Henry Seitz and wife.
Henry born 27 Dec. 1778, bapt. 21 Apr. 1779, parents Jacob Stadler and Anna; witnesses Henry Seitz and wife Elizabeth.

(end of page 1)

In the 1850 census Emanuel was listed as 72 and Henry as 70 which would mean they were born about 1778 and 1780. This is not a big discrepancy and I believe we have good evidence that this family was in Hagerstown to baptize their first two sons. There is no proof yet that they are related to the Stotlers who lived in the area.

Group 6 Casper Statler Senior

Since many of the subscribers of this newsletter descend from Casper Statler Senior I think it is appropriate to publish some of the information I have on his family.

Casper Statler (sometimes referred to as Joseph Statler or Stotler) is buried in the Statler Family Cemetary in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. His birth date given on his stone in 18 August 1843 and his death date 12 April 1798.

His wife was Rebecca (Walter) Statler died 20 Feb. 1826. The stone says her age was 90 but it was most certainly 80 giving her a birth year of about 1746. In November of 1755 she and two of her brother's John and Ephraim and a sister Mary were carried off by Indians. Her father, Casper or Joseph Walter, and some of the other children were killed. Rebecca was returned to Lancaster Pennsylvania in August of 1762. It is said she and Casper were married in 1762 or 1763 in Carlisle but no record of the date has been found.

Their children:

1. Casper Statler Junior was born 19 April 1767 and died 25 April 1833 (dates from tombstone). He married Mary Lambert on 12 June 1792.

2. Mary Statler was born about 1768 and died 14 Feb. 1852. She married John Lambert.

3. Elizabeth Statler was born about 1770 and died 25 Jan 1829. She married George Lambert.

4. John Statler was born 3 April 1773 and died 20 June 1844. He married first Mollie Lambert about 1795, and second Catharine Michael on 18 May 1817.

5. Samuel Statler was born 15 January 1774 and died 17 May 1860. He married Magdolena Mostoller.

6. Emanuel Statler was born about 1780 and died after 1860. He married Catharine Mostoller.

7. Eleanor Statler was born about 1788 and died 26 March 1859. She married Peter Schell.

Some information is usually stated about Casper Statler Senior that needs some further examination.

First that he is the Casper Statler was was an Ensign in the Forbes expedition in 1758 and 1759. If his age is correct on his tombstone he would have been 15 or 16 at the time. While I am no expert of rnilitary history, that seem very young.

Second that he is the Casper Stattler was took the oath to the English Crown on 13 August 1750 after arriving from Rotterdam on

(end of page 2)

the Ship Bennet Galley. Again he was about seven years old in 1750 and those taking oaths were over the age of sixteen.

One possible way to reconcile this information would be to prove that Casper was born considerably before 1743. Another would be to identify another Casper Statler who was older. I know this is troublesome, but accepting all that has been written about Casper Statler is not a good idea. His estate records give a list of his children so I am confident we can trace his descendents. I of course would like to know his ancestors also.

Research Aid

The United States Census records are the foundation of genealogical research in the United States. The Census has been taken every ten years starting in 1790. From 1790 through 1840 the only names that were recorded were "Heads of Households" others in the home were marked as male or female by age groups.

In 1850 every person in the household was listed along vith their age and place of birth. This makes 1850 a key census and an index has been published for every state that was in existence at that time. A majority of these books list only the head of household or any person in the household with a last name different than that of the head. There are very few states with published indexes for the years 1860 and 1870.

In 1880 the census began to list each individual's relationship to the Head of Household. Also an special index of the 1880 census was done by the federal government to aid individuals in proving their age to qualify for Social Security. This index is called a Soundex. In the Soundex, all households in which there were children under 10 years old were extracted and the last name was encoded using the consonants. The code for Stadler, Stateler, Statler, Stetler, and Stotler is S334.

The census of 1890 was destroyed by fire. The next census is the 1900 census. For the 1900 census every household was placed in the Soundex. The 1910 census is available for research but a Soundex only exists for some of the states. The census records from 1920 on to the present are not open for research by the public at this time, because of privacy laws.

That is a very brief explanation of a subject about which many books have been written. Check your local library for more details.

Now I want to give some real examples of how I have used the census records to obtain information on the families of some of the subscribers of this newsletter.

The Ancestors of Wayne Stotler of Buchanan,HI.

This is part of a letter sent to me by Augusta Stotler (Wayne's mother) "We aren't sure where William Stotler was born but his children: Minnie, John, David (Wayne's Grandfather), Melly -this is the only name I ever heard her called, Esther and Dallas -nickname "Pat". All six were born in the Tipton, Indiana area." Also David Stotler's birth was given as 1894.

I then went to the National Archives Branch and looked at the microfilm of the 1900 Soundex for S334 in Indiana. (the state of search must be know). I found the following record:

(end of page 3)

In Madison Township, Tipton County.

Stottler, William H. born July 1858 age 41 born in Illinois
"      Mary E. wife Apr. 1865 35 Indiana
"  Minnie M. dau. Sep. 1882 17 "
"        John A. son Aug. 1886 13 "
"     Mellie L. dau. Feb. 1888 12 "
"      David H. son Mar. 1892 8 "
"      Ester L. dau. Feb. 1898 2 "

The volume, page, and line of the original census is given and I checked that for more information. William's parents were both born in Ohio. Mary's parents were born in Kentucky. William and Mary had been married 17 years. Mary had had five children and five were living. William's occupation was day laborer and they lived in a house (as opposed to on a farm) which they rented.

But I also found another Stottler family in Madison County, Tipton County in 1900.

Stottler,      John E. born Nov. 1863 age 36 born in Illinois
"    Mary M. wife Jan. 1870 30 Indiana
"        Carrie dau. June 1889 10 "
"          Pearl dau. July 1894 5 "
"   Josiah J. father May 1824 76 Ohio
Marshell, Evert J. b-law Oct. 1877 22 Indiana

In the actual census records I found that John's parents were both born in Ohio and Mary's father was born in Indiana and her mother in Ohio. They had been married 11 years and she had had two children both of whom were living.

Josiah did not know where his parents were born and he was a widower and a farm laborer.

Now I would strongly suspect that John E. and William H. Stottler are brothers and that would mean that Josiah J. was the father of both. The next place we might look is the 1880 Soundex for Indiana and Illinois. Since John would have been about 16 and William about 21 the family may have not had a child under 10 and therefore not been coded. I did not find them in the 1880 Soundex.

Note the steps I have taken to obtain this information.

1. Check the Soundex or Index in the state of known residence.
2. Record any other families in the same County with the same name.
3. Go to the actual record and record any other information there.

We now need some additional information to proceed. I have found that there in a large group of Stotlar's in Williamson County, Illinois in the 1880 Soundex, but have not check the actual census. The 1938 family history I have says that these are the descendents of Joseph Stotler who lived in Brown County, Ohio.

In Jackson Township, Brown County, Ohio 27 Sept 1850 page 484

Joseph Stotler age 80 farmer born Virginia
Catherine   " 50 N. C.
Josiah        " 21 Ohio
Charity      " 18 "
Eliza          " 17 "
Susanah     " 13 "
Levi           " 11 "
Rachel B.   " 7 "

(end of page 4)

I must admire a man of eighty with a seven year old child. Anyway we have a Josiah but his age is five years off. So more checking must be done. I did double check the 1850 census. Josiah should be 1ocated in the 1860 and 1870 census.

I checked the 1938 History I have and it mentions that Joseph Stotler had a son Jackson who came to Illinois with his half-brother Samuel and went back to Indiana around 1865 and settled near Tipton, Indiana.

So the logical place to look would be Williamson County, Illinois in 1860 and Tipton County, Indiana in 1870. Also check for someone named Josiah or Jackson.

Now I have reached the point that I do not have the time to follow through. I can suggest places were a person can go to find the census record.

1. The local public library, many can obtain census microfilms through inter-library loan. There will be some charge and the wait for the film can be from weeks to months.

2. The nearest Branch Library of the Latter Day Saint Genealogical Library. You do not have to be a member of the L.D.S. Church to do research in their libraries. They have some census film at the branch I use and any others can be rented from the Salt Lake City Library for a small fee. The wait is between one and three months. Write to the following for a list of the library branches near you:

Genealogical Department
Correspondence Unit
50 North Temple
Salt Lake City, Utah  84150

3. Large public libraries. The Fort Wayne Library in Indiana has a complete set of census films. The California State Library in Sacramento has all the California Census records. The Sutro Library in South San Francisco has may Census films from all states.

4. The L.D.S. Library, 35 North West Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah 84150.

5. The National Archives and it's Branches. They each have all the available census microfilm. Branches are in Waltham, MA; Bayonne, NJ; Philadelphia, PA; East Point, GA; Chicago, IL; Kansas City MO; Ft. Worth TX; Denver, CO; Laguna Niguel, CA; San Bruno, CA; and Seattle WA;

Please call or write to make sure of the hours the library or Archive Branch will be open before your first visit. I managed to arrive in Salt Lake City on Pioneer Day when the Library I had come to use was closed. That is a long way to go to find you should have called ahead.

On page 6 and 7 is a beautiful family tree of the descendents of Robert and Mary Stadler of Caswell County, North Carolina prepared by W. Ernest Blalock. (Group 13)

Need information on Jacob W. Statelor, lived Marion County, Ohio 1830 and James Statelor twin brother of John born about 1805 Ohio.

ED. NOTE; Eva sent me some information from the History of Marion County in relating some stories of the relationship of some of the early stettlers with the Indians.

"Capt. Beckley relates the following occurrence as given by Benjamin Sharrock, now well advanced in years, and formerly a citizen of Marion County:

'About the year 1821 or 1822, there were several Indians who frequently camped and hunted on the waters of the West and Middle Forks of the Whetstone, to wit: Capt. Dowdee, his son Tom, and Capt. Dowdee's son-in-law, Nickels (the bad Indian), the subject of this narrative. He was regarded as a dangerous man among his own companions. He had become embittered against Benjamin Sharrock, his brother, Everard Sharrock, and Jacob Stateler, who with his three sons, Andrew, James and John (the latter were twin brothers), lived in a cabin on or near the land now owned by George Diegle, Esq., in Tully Township. The Dowdees had frequently shared the hospitalities of our cabin and we regarded them and peacable and well disposed citizens.'

The article goes on to relate some incidents with the Indian Nickels which the Sharrocks and Statelers survived.

As for the twin brothers James and John, Eva and I believe the the James Statler of Berrien County, Michigan in 1850 age 44 (see Issue 2 page 9) and her ancestor John Statler of Winnebago County, Wisconsin in 1850 age 44 are the twin sons of Jacob Stateler. Both were born in Ohio.

(end of page 8)

Eva also sent this census record;

Lincoln Township, Morrow County, Ohio, 8 August 1850, page 45

Daniel Bennet 67 born Pa.
Rhoda     " 64         Mass.
Jacob Statelor 77         Va. (blind)

This Jacob may be the Jacob in the above story, he is thirty-three years older than John and James and lived in the right area. The question of who Jacob might be then comes up. I would guess he might be the son of John Statler Senior of Licking County, Ohio.

Peter Statler Group 6

Peter Statler was born in Germany and eventually settled in Cambria County, Pennsylvania near the family of Casper Statler in Somerset County. (See Issue Number One, page 4)

Here is his family in the 1850 census.
