FROM THE EDITOR

This is the last issue of the newsletter.  I have learned quite a bit, although not nearly as much as I would have liked.  I was not able to trace any line back to their origins in Europe.  I still have a few puzzles I would like to solve.   Genealogy is going to be put on the back burner for a while, because the house I moved into is badly in need of attention.

If you have questions you think I might be able to help with, please write and if you include a self addressed stamped envelope you will get a reply.  I have much more information but only put into the newsletter that which I felt would be the most valuable.

SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH

Group 1
Group 1 was in Northampton County early.  The immigrants were Christian and Philip Stettler.  Most likely they came from Switzerland, but I know of no proof of this.  Research should be done in Northampton and Lehigh Counties, and the Canton of Bern, Switzerland.

Group 2
Montgomery County, formerly part of Philadelphia County.  The early Statlers are most likely the ones that went to North Carolina and on to Missouri (see Group 14).

SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH (Continued)

Group 3
Chester County, Pennsylvania, spelled their name Stiteler.  Start search in Chester County.

Group 4
Lancaster and Dauphin Counties, Pennsylvania.  Early residents were Abraham and Christian Stetler.  George V. Stetler lived near by in Bethel Township, Berks County, before moving to Ohio.

Group 5
York County, Pennsylvania.  Start search in York County.

Group 6
Franklin County, Pennsylvania.  I would suppose that the men that we identify as the earliest in this group are the sons of brothers that came from Europe.   Some traditions say they were French Huguenots.  The first names Casper, Rudolph, Emanuel and Jacob are found early in Switzerland.

Group 7
Washington County, Maryland.  Most likely related to Group 6.

Group 8
Loudoun County, Virginia.  John Statler, born about 1759, lived to age 97 and is buried in Lovettsville.  1850 census had him born in Pennsylvania.   Search in Loudoun County and Pennsylvania.

Group 9
Berkeley County, Virginia.  They probably are part of Group 6, because they came to Berkeley County from Maryland.

Group 10
Monongalia County, (West) Virginia.  Jacob and Stephen Stateler (Stradler) might have been brothers.  Remember to look for the Stradler spelling along with Statler and Stateler.

Group 11
Hampshire County, (West) Virginia.  Search in Hampshire County.

Group 12
Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

Group 13
Caswell County, North Carolina.  Probably related to Group 8.

Group 14
Lincoln County, North Carolina.  Most likely originally from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Group 15
Richland County, South Carolina.  Search Richland County.

Group 16
Harrison County, (West) Virginia.  Search Harrison County.  May have come from Fredrick County, Virginia or Maryland.

SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH (Continued)

Group 17
Montgomery County, Ohio.  I think they are connected to Group 4.

Not Grouped
Joseph Stotler of Brown County, Ohio born about 1770 in Virginia.   Edwin Stotler, who I believe is a descendent of Joseph's, did research in the 1930's.  He wrote that Joseph was the son of Jacob Statler of Monongalia County, (West) Virginia.  I doubt this.  No one else in Group 10 spelled the name "Stotler".  There were Stotlers in Hampshire County, Virginia perhaps he is part of that group.  Early Ohio records might give a clue as to where Joseph came from.  Closer examination of the service records of the War of 1812 and the Bounty Land Grants records for that war might help.

FAMILY OF EMANUEL STATLER

(Son of Casper Statler and Rebecca Walter Statler of Somerset County, Pennsylvania)

Emanuel Statler was born about 1780 in Pennsylvania and died after 1860.  He married Catharine Mostoller who was born about 1781 and died 14 April 1836.  She is buried in the Statler Family Cemetery.

Children

David Statler    born 14 Nov. 1810 and died 1890.  Married Dorcus Hartzell.

Joshua Statler    born 31 Oct. 1817 and died in 1822.

Eleanor Statler    born 16 June 1823 and died 21 Aug. 1850.   Married her first cousin Samuel Statler Jr.

Note:  Other sources give the names of two more children Charlotte and Casper, but I can not confirm this.  Emanuel was named guardian, in 1837, of Ann and Casper Statler children of Casper Statler Jr. (son of John Statler).
