Abernathy, Elmer Robert

SEDGEWICKVILLE, Mo. -- Elmer R. Abernathy, 85, of Sedgewickville passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born June 14, 1926, in Oriel, Mo., son of Robert and Lela Singleton Abernathy. He and Charlette Owens were married Feb. 8, 1950.

Elmer retired from Teco Barge Line, formerly Mid South, as a first mate. He was a member of Millersville Baptist Church.

He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II from June 4, 1945, to Nov. 17, 1946. He served in the Southern Philippine Liberation.

He is survived by his wife, Charlette of Sedgewickville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Carole Abernathy, Michael and Sue Abernathy, all of Sedgewickville; a brother, Norman "Buck" Abernathy of Jackson; a sister, Alma Abernathy of Jackson; four grandchildren, Andrew, Tia, Casey, Justin; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, two sisters and a granddaughter, Corey Lynn Abernathy.

Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to service time Saturday at Liley Funeral Home in Patton, Mo.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Daniel Hale officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery near Sedgewickville, with full military rites by Missouri Military Honors Team.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to Millersville Baptist Church or Southeast Hospice.
