Barks, Edward Newton

MARBLE HILL - A man born back in the days just after the Civil War, Edward N. Barks, died Tuesday afternoon at his home at Jackson. He was 96 years old, and was born in Bollinger County Sep. 5, 1868. He lived in the county 94 years, and was a farmer.

His marriage to Sarah Stevens was 73 years ago. They were married June 4, 1891 when he was 23. Mr. Barks was a son of Jesse T. Barks and Mary Barks.

For a span of 74 years Mr. Barks held membership in the New Salem Missionary Baptist Curch.

Mrs. Barks survives and others surviving are four sons, Burlen Barks and Jess H. Barks, Marble Hill; Wendell Barks, Glen Allen; and Basil Barks, Leopold; three daughters, Mrs. Alt L. Felty, Millersville; Mrs. W.H. McMullen, St. Louis; and Mrs. Charles O. Schreiner, Jackson; two sisters, Mrs. Eva M. Ramsey, Sikeston; and Mrs. Nettie Rhodes, Cape Girardeau; 19 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

A prayer service will be conducted at the Ward Funeral Home in Lutesville at 1:30 Thursday, and the Rev. Orval Hawn will hold the rites at Church of Christ at Scopus at 2 Thursday. Burial will be in Cook Cemetery at Scopus.
