Barks, Margaret L. (nee Jaco)

Margaret Barks, 77, passed away Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, at her home in Jackson.

She was born Jan. 1, 1928, in Cape Girardeau County, daughter of the late Ferdinand and Claudina Balsman Jaco.

Margaret graduated from Jackson High School in 1945, and was an avid supporter of the Jackson Indians. She was proud to be a member of the Jackson community.

She worked many years at the former International Shoe Co. in Jackson and Cape Girardeau, retiring in 1989.

Loving survivors include three children, Nedra Portell and husband Mike of Festus, Mo., Melissa Kane of Tustin, Calif., Ron Barks and wife Daphne of Calabasas, Calif.; four grandchildren, Mick Portell and wife Lori of St. Louis, Lance Portell and wife Michelle of St. Charles, Mo, Tyler Barks and Ashley Barks of Calabasas.

Also surviving is a brother and sister-in-law, Clarence "Pete" and June Jaco of Whitewater; two sisters, Bertha Newell of Bloomfield, Mo., Clara Wright of Jackson; a sister-in-law, Judy Jaco of Jackson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Cletus Jaco, in 1987.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson.

The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. John Rice officiating. Interment will be in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Teen Challenge of Orange County, Calif., or Proffer Cemetery.
