Barks, Noel Philip

Noel Philip Barks, 76, of Scott City died Monday, June 20, 2011, at Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Oct. 22, 1934, in Sedgewickville, Mo., son of Philip and Estella Cook Barks.

Noel graduated from Patton High School (now Meadow Heights) in 1952. He attended Southeast Missouri State University two years.

He and Peggy Smith were married Jan. 19, 1957, in Hernando, Miss. They lived in Cape Girardeau 24 years before moving to Scott City in 1979.

Noel served on active duty in the U.S. Army from June 1957 to June 1959, followed by six years in the reserves. He was a paratrooper, then a tank driver and gunner in Germany.

He worked 23 years as a repairman on the assembly line at Superior Electric Corp. in Cape Girardeau. He was a member of Red Star Baptist Church.

Noel enjoyed gardening, reading, football and baseball games. He especially enjoyed attending baseball and football games of the neighborhood children.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy; a sister, Loraine Garland of St. Charles, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Barks of Jackson; a brother-in-law, Walter Smith of Park Hills, Mo.; numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.

Noel was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lowell Barks.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Donny Ford officiating. Burial will be in Lightner Cemetery in Scott City with full military honors.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, American Diabetes Association or Southeast Hospice.
