Bess, Mariah (nee Berry)
Mariah Bess (nee Berry) was born in Madison County, Mo., March 29, 1852, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B. C. Francis, in Flat River, Mo., March 9, 1939, aged 86 years, 11 months and 10 days. Her husband, Albert Bess, preceded her in death 27 years ago.
Mrs. Bess lived in Farmington until about 20 years ago, moving to Oklahoma in the year 1918, making her home with her daughters, Mrs. M. A. Young and Miss Effa Bess, and continued to reside there until about one and a half years ago at which time she returned to the home of her daughter, Mrs. B. C. Francis, in Flat River and remained there until the time of her death.
She leaves to mourn her death five children, Mrs. B. C. Francis, of Flat River; W. H. Bess, of Poplar Bluff; M. S. Bess, of Cape Girardeau; Mrs. M. A. Young and Miss Effa Bess, of Tulsa, Okla., also 16 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Taylor Avenue Methodist Church in Flat River, Mo., Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Her grandsons acted as pallbearers and her granddaughters as flower girls. Interment was held in the Masonic Cemetery at Farmington, Mo.
