Bollinger, Charley Gifford
MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Charley Gifford Bollinger, 98, of Marble Hill died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Dec. 17, 1905, in Marble Hill, son of John Andy and Minnie Bollinger. He and Marjorie Hopkins were married March 2, 1933, in Bollinger County.
Mr. Bollinger was a member of Marble Hill Bible Chapel, graduated from Lutesville High School, and later played with an independent basketball team, the Cape Crescents.
He taught in a one-room school at Hog Creek in Bollinger County, served on the Bollinger County Library Board, Twin City Park Board, Grand Jury in Bollinger County, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Bollinger served in the Army National Guard in the 1920s.
He was in partnership with his father-in-law, C.F. Hopkins, operating a milling business in Puxico, Mo., and grocery stores in Whitewater and Bell City, Mo. In 1970 he retired and moved with his wife to Marble Hill, where they lived until August 2003 when they moved to Cape Girardeau.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Gene Bollinger of Waynesville, Mo., Jim and Jan Bollinger of Marble Hill, Tim and Janet Bollinger of Warner Robins, Ga.; four sisters, Connie Mayfield, Belva Banta, Hazel Hutson and Mary Lou Hansen, all of Marble Hill; three brothers, Carl Bollinger of Richmond, Va., Truman Bollinger of Cape Girardeau, Dick Bollinger of Marble Hill; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers.
Friends may call at Liley Funeral Home in Marble Hill from 4 to 8 p.m. today.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with Dr. John Englehart and Frank Burgess officiating. Burial will be in Bollinger County Memorial Park Cemetery.
