Brotherton, Oscar Rosolee "Lee"

Oscar Rosolee “Lee” Brotherton 84, of Jackson, died peacefully in his sleep Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones.

He was born February 12, 1929, in Patton, MO, son of John Franklin and Nola Elizabeth Reagan Brotherton. He and Essie Lucille Littleton met at a church picnic, and were married December 11, 1953.

In his early years, Lee worked as a hired hand and did odd jobs to help support his family in the years following the great depression. In 1950 his family moved to Jackson. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1951-1953. He worked in construction, for Kasten Brick Yard, drove a route truck for Coca Cola Bottling Company, and was a machinist in the fitting room of the Shoe Factory, all in Jackson. He worked 13 years in the paint room at General Motors in St. Louis, commuting every day before taking early retirement in 1979 due to health conditions. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Jackson, and most recently attended The Apostolic Promise Church in Cape Girardeau.

Lee led a very active life until he suffered a heart attack in January of 2013. He loved taking care of his grandkids and taking them to different activities and events. He enjoyed going to garage sales and auctions, and always had a passion for hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was a member of the Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post #158 in Jackson for 60 years. Lee was a man of his word, a very hard worker, and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

Loving survivors include his wife, Essie, of 59 years; four daughters, Dianna (Tom) Hale, Vicki (Ted) Holzum, Kim (Ken) Brown, and Carol Jo (Jason) Roberts; seven grandchildren, Chris Brown, Shelly (Ben) Meier, Victoria Brown, Robert (Amanda) Holzum, Brittney Sides, Cassie Roberts, and Conner Roberts; four great grandchildren; a brother, Gus Brotherton; many close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, John, J.B. and Kelly Brotherton, two sisters, Gertrude Pulliam and Veda Skinner.

Friends may call Tuesday, September 24, 2013 from 4-8 PM at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson, with an American Legion service at 7:00.

The funeral service will be Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at 10:00 AM, at the funeral home, with the Revs. Timothy Lee and Wiley Kaufman officiating.

Interment will follow in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson, with full military honors.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to The Apostolic Promise Church in Cape Girardeau
