Bushard, Hazel Mary (nee Hahs)

SEDGEWICKVILLE, Mo. -- Hazel Mary Bushard, 91, of Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

She was born March 17, 1912, at Sedgewickville, daughter of Theodore W. and Mary Barks Hahs. She and Carl E. Bushard were married May 26, 1940, at the Hahs family home in Bollinger County, Mo.

Bushard received a teaching certificate from Southeast Missouri State University. She taught in rural Southeast Missouri schools from 1934 to 1941, a year at Checkrow School near Bushnell, Ill., and at Dunfermline Grace School from 1960 to 1971.

She was a member of First Christian Church of Canton, Ill., and its CCC Sunday School Class, Fulton County Retired Teachers Association, Fulton County Rockhounders, and Fulton County AARP Chapter.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Heckel of Edwardsville, Ill., Vivian Sprecher of Des Moines, Iowa, Donna O'Bryant of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother, M. Luther Hahs of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Gladys Deye of Winona, Minn.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Bushard; a brother, Truman P. Hahs; four sisters, Viola Sebaugh, Mae Kolb, Faye Kehren and Joy Johnston.

Friends may call at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home in Canton from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday. The funeral will be at 7.

Visitation will also be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Sargents Chapel Lutheran Church near Daisy, Mo.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Steve Simmons officiating. Burial will be in Sargents Chapel Cemetery.
