Carter, Fern Audell (nee Yount)

CHESAPEAKE - Fern Y. Carter, 84, formerly of the 1700 block of Willow Ave., passed away Dec. 18, 2008. Born in Perryville, Mo., she was the daughter of William and Mamie Yount and was the widow of James L. Carter.

Fern was a member of Oaklette United Methodist Church and was an avid supporter of her children, grandchildren, church and community. She served many years as a registrar for the City of Chesapeake.

She was predeceased by her two sisters, Pansy Meads and Iris Natchus; and her brother, William Yount. Survivors include her daughter, Cynthia Carter West and husband Jule of Norfolk; her son, Jeffrey L. Carter and wife Cindy of Charlottesville; two sisters, Rose Rice and Lillie Early and husband Andrew; her sisters-in-law, Evelyn Yount, Joyce Carter and her husband William, Mabel Bull and her husband Arthur; her brother-in-law, George Natchus; and three grandchildren, Kayla, Noah and Kathryn.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. The Rev. Eugene Meek and the Rev. Tom Mercer will officiate. Interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Viewing will begin Sunday with the family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m. in the funeral home.
