Clingingsmith, Karen Sue (nee Deck)

Karen Sue Clingingsmith, 53, formerly of Cape Girardeau, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at her home in Terre Haute, Ind.

Friends may call Saturday, Feb. 23, between 4-8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 24, after 2 p.m. at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson, Mo.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Sam Roethemeyer will officiate.

Mrs. Clingingsmith was born Nov. 21, 1948, in Cape Girardeau, daughter of Paul Vincent and Normagene Mercer Deck. She and Robert L. Clingingsmith were united in marriage March 29, 1970, in Cape Girardeau. This March they would have celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary.

Loving survivors include her husband; a son, Kyle Deck Clingingsmith of Indianapolis, Ind.; a daughter, Keely Clingingsmith of Terre Haute; mother, Normagene Deck of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Terry Deck of Vicksburg, Miss.; a sister, Judy Kay Wilson of Bell City, Mo.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Alvin "Jake" and Alma Clingingsmith of Jackson, Mo.; and two sisters-in-law, Connie Friedrich (Roger) of Cape Girardeau, and Debbie Scholl (Ted) of Jackson.

Her father and a brother, Stephen Deck, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Clingingsmith was a Cape Girardeau Central High School graduate. In 1971 she graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a bachelor of science degree in secondary education. She worked many years teaching K-12th grades.

An avid supporter of her children, she was active in Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, PTA, and served on the former executive committee of the University School in Terre Haute.

She was a charter member and co-founder of Terre Haute North Soccer Booster Club, helped to sanction girls high school soccer in the state of Indiana, and served on the executive committee of Vigo County Youth Soccer Association. She also helped to relocate displaced workers with Western Indiana Employment Training Services, and was a member of Alpha Zi Delta Sorority.
