Compas, Leo George

Leo G. Compas Jr., 83, of Cape Girardeau, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Aug. 21, 1918, at New Hamburg, Mo., son of Leo H. Compas and Clara Diebold Compas. He and the late Rhoda Crump were married Nov. 9, 1940, at Cape Girardeau. She died March 7, 2000.

Compas retired from Lone Star in 1983. He worked at the Cook Paint Store for 21 years and also worked for the Cotton Belt Railroad. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and a member of St. Mary Cathedral Church in Cape Girardeau. He was also a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1111.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Compas of Johnston City, Ill., and Gerald Compas of Carlsbad, Calif.; three brothers, Elmer Compas of Brea, Calif., and Raymond Compas and Vernon Compas, both of Cape Girardeau; and five sisters, Clara Cruickshank of Orlando, Fla., Bernice Glass and Rita Yarborough, both of Cape Girardeau, Betty Henley of Grayling, Mich., and Lucille Waters of Southwell Fleet, Mass.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter and a sister.

Friends may call at the Ford and Sons Funeral Home on Mount Auburn from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with parish prayers starting at 7 and a Knights of Columbus rosary service to follow.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Cathedral, with Monsignor Richard Rolwing officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary Cemetery.
