Cotner, Stephen Ray

Stephen Ray Cotner, 60, of St. Louis entered his heavenly home Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, at St. Louis University Hospital.

He was born Oct. 15, 1953, in Cape Girardeau, to Hannah Rumfelt and Chester Cotner.

Cotner graduated from Central High School in 1971 and did undergraduate work at Southeast Missouri State University. He graduated from St. Louis Lutheran School of Nursing in 1980.

He worked at John Cochran Veterans Administration Hospital, where he retired after 32 years of service. Steve was especially well-known for his huge smile, his dry wit and the caring and compassionate care he gave his patients. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.

He is survived by a special friend, Robert Brandhorst; a brother, David Cotner of Cape Girardeau; three sisters, Judi Welsh of Jackson, Deborah (Randy) Norman of Troy, Missouri, and Vicki (Kent) Zickfield of Cape Girardeau; numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved like his own children; and many friends and co-workers who were his extended family.

A visitation will be at 9 a.m. Friday, followed by a joyous celebration of a wonderful life at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, officiated by Douglas Breite. Interment will be in High Hill Cemetery at Neelys Landing.

Memorial contributions can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Trinity Lutheran School 7th Grade Science Fund or the American Cancer Society.
