Craig, Ivan R.
Ivan R. "Doc" Craig, 87, of Cape Girardeau, formerly of Scott City, passed away Sunday, March 21, 2010, at Ratliff Care Center, where he had been a resident the past year.
He was born March 17, 1923, in Fredericktown, Mo., son of P.M. and Barbara Betteuo Craig. He and Mary Baugh were married May 21, 1948. She passed away May 30, 1985. He and Farrell Cronenbold Lufcy were married June 29, 1990. She passed away Nov. 2, 2009.
Ivan was a graduate of the former Lutesville High School, and was valedictorian of his class. He joined the United States Marine Corps on Dec. 7, 1942, and was honorably discharged Nov. 6, 1945, as a corporal.
He worked as a foreman on roads and bridges for the former Potashnick Construction Co. and the former SEMO Bridge and Grading Co. in Cape Girardeau until the early 1970s. He then drove for Purolator Courier in Cape Girardeau until his retirement.
Ivan was a member of Cape Girardeau VFW Post 3838, a former member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Dongola, Mo., and was a member of Unity Baptist Church in Benton, Mo.
As an avid craftsman, he enjoyed building Victorian doll houses and furniture that he exhibited at local craft fairs.
Loving survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sue Craig of Jackson; a daughter, Sue Ramsey of Cape Girardeau; three grandchildren, Michael Craig of Jackson, Ronda (Tim) St. Arbor of Barlow, Ky., and Vickie (John) Slayton of Canalou, Mo.; four great-grandchildren, Steven, Robbie, Jonathan, and Jason Kelly.
Also a stepson, John (Shirley) Lufcy of Scott City; a stepdaughter, Darlene (Rulen) Spies of Greenville, Mo.; three stepgrandchildren, Norman (Tina) Spies of Scott City, Elizabeth (Paul) Hanner of El Paso, Texas, Jill (Craig) Goodson of Jackson; five great-stepgrandchildren, Ryan and Collin Lyle, Layne and Hayley Spies, and Kinsey Goodson; a brother, Paul (Jean) Craig of Tipton, Ind.; and a sister, Ruth (Bob) Harlan of Houston.
He was preceded in death by two infant brothers, Gifford Monroe Craig and Roy Lee Craig; two sisters, Comfort Craig and Lydia Sanders.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Revs. Dale Huff and Marvin Lawless officiating. Interment will be in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson, with full military honors.
