Crites, Dewey Lynn

Dewey Lynn Crites, 85, of Victoria, Texas, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at Citizens Memorial Hospital in Victoria.

He was born Oct. 25, 1917, in Oak Ridge, son of Clarence and Sarah Smith Crites. He and Helen Inez Harris were married in July 1962. She died Feb. 26, 1994.

Crites was a medical corpsman with the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1957. He was a veteran of World War II and served on the USS South Dakota, Guadalupe and Radford.

He received the Victory Medal, American Theater Medal, European-African-Middle East Medal with seven stars, American Defense Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign with three Bronze Stars, China Service Medal and Navy Occupation Service Medal.

Crites then worked at Ostertage Opticians in St. Louis, retiring in 1984. He moved to Victoria in 1994.

Survivors include a son, Ray Crites of Port Lavaca, Texas; a daughter, Sharon Reininger of St. Louis; a sister, Audrey Riehn of Hemet, Calif.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

Friends may call at Cracraft-Miller Funeral Home in Jackson after 11 a.m. Friday.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jon Sedgwick officiating. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery at Jackson, with a military honors service.
