Dickmann, Howard W., Dr.

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Dr. Howard W. Dickmann, 94, of Perryville departed this life Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at Laclede Groves Care Center in Webster Groves, Mo.

He was born Aug. 6, 1919, in Perry County, to K.R. and Martha Knoll Dickmann. He and Susan M. Bredall were married Oct. 8, 1944, in Perryville.

Howard attended the Lutheran grade school in Perryville, and graduated from Perryville High School in 1937. After attending the University of Missouri from 1937 to 1939, he went to Texas A&M University where he earned the degree of doctor of veterinary medicine in 1943.

He served two years in the Army Veterinary Corps during World War II and was stationed at Fort Devens, Mass. He attained the rank of captain and was honorably discharged in August 1947.

Howard returned to Perryville where he established Dickmann Animal Hospital and practiced veterinary medicine 43 years. He enjoyed travel, especially by car, and during his lifetime was able to visit all 50 states, Mexico and Canada.

He was a member of the Perryville Lions Club and Moonier-Reddick American Legion Post 63 years. He also held lifetime memberships in the American Veterinary Medical Association, Missouri Veterinary Medical Association and Southeast Missouri Veterinary Medical Association.

Survivors include his wife, Susan of Webster Groves; a daughter, Janice Yamnitz and husband Michael of Owensville, Mo.; a son, John B. Dickmann and wife Rachel of Fenton, Mo.; five grandchildren, Dr. Lisa Huettel and husband Dr. Scott Huettel of Durham, N.C., Laura Guenthner and husband David of Bentonville, Ark., William B. Gresham IV and wife Annaliese of Durham and Alex and Erik Dickmann of Fenton; and eight great-grandchildren, Elissa and Nicholas Huettel of Durham, Ava, Owen and Cannon Guenthner of Bentonville, and Liam, Findlay and Sebastian Gresham of Durham.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Young and Sons Funeral Home in Perryville. The wake with American Legion Post 133 will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville, preceded by visitation at 10 a.m.

The family requests that any memorials be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church or School in Perryville.

He was united in marriage with Susan M. Bredall on October 8, 1944, in Perryville.

Surviving him are his wife, Susan, who resides in Webster Groves; his daughter Janice Yamnitz and husband Michael of Owensville; his son John B. Dickmann and wife Rachel of Fenton; grandchildren: Dr. Lisa Huettel and husband Dr. Scott Huettel of Durham, North Carolina; Laura Guenthner and husband David of Bentonville, Arkansas; William B. Gresham IV and wife Annaliese of Durham, North Carolina; Alex Dickmann of Fenton; and Erik Dickmann of Fenton; great grandchildren: Elissa and Nicholas Huettel of Durham, North Carolina; Ava, Owen and Cannon Guenthner of Bentonville, Arkansas; and Liam, Findlay and Sebastian Gresham of Durham, North Carolina.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 am on Monday, May 5, 2014, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville, preceded by visitation at 10 am.

The Family requests that any memorials be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church or School in Perryville.
