Farrar, George Oliver, Dr.
Dr. George Oliver Farrar, 89, of Cape Girardeau passed away Monday, Nov. 12, 2012.
He was born July 17, 1923, in Elvins, Mo., to Dr. Charles B. and Estella Farrar. He had lived in Cape Girardeau since 1951.
Farrar graduated from Flat River (Mo.) High School in 1941 and attended Flat River Junior College and Cape Teachers College (now Southeast Missouri State University).
He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and attended boot training in Farragut, Idaho. From there he was transferred to San Francisco, where he worked in a hospital ward, and then was accepted in the dental department for training.
While in San Francisco, he met Loma Jeanne Fox. They both were discharged from the Navy in 1946, and were married in Kansas City, Mo., in 1948.
He graduated from Kansas City Western Dental College (now the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry) in 1950, where he was a member of Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity. Farrar practiced dentistry in Kansas City and then moved to Cape Girardeau in 1951 to set up a private practice in the old First National Bank Building on Main Street. He later moved his practice to 230 North Middle St., where it was until he retired in 1988.
Farrar was a lifetime member of Missouri Dental Association and a past president of Cape Dental Study Group. He was a longtime, active member and usher at Centenary United Methodist Church, where he was active in the Methodist Men's Club and served on various committees. He was a past member of Cape Girardeau Jaycees and Cape Rotary Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Jeanne, who passed away Aug. 8, 2012, and a son, George Michael Farrar.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan (Bill) Cole of Cape Girardeau and Mary (Kevin) Enger of St. Peters, Mo.; two grandchildren, Chris and Katie Cole of Cape Girardeau; two stepgrandsons, Eric and Alex Enger of St. Louis; a sister, Wilma Bergjans of O'Fallon, Mo.; a brother-in-law, Gerald Fox of Alma, Mich.; nieces, nephews and many friends.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to service time Wednesday at Centenary United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Karen Nothdurft officiating.
Ford and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
The family asks that memorials be sent to Centenary United Methodist Church.
