Grant, Joe Don
Joe Don Grant, age 78, of Jackson passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2010, in Grand Lake, Colo.
He was born June 21, 1932, in Jackson, son of George B. and Ella Grossheider Grant. He and Edna Mae Schlegel were married June 25, 1954, in Jackson.
Joe Don graduated from Jackson High School in 1950 and was inducted into the U.S. Navy (Naval Air) during the Korean War on Dec. 5, 1951, serving as a 3rd class petty officer until Oct. 5, 1953. He worked at the former Jackson Shoe Factory from 1953 to 1956 and as a technician at Southwestern Bell Co. in Cape Girardeau and Scott counties from 1956 until his retirement in 1991.
He and his family moved to Chaffee, Mo., in 1968. He and his wife owned and operated the former Grant's Florist and then co-owned the former Hearts and Flowers Bridal Shop, both in Chaffee. He was a former member of the Rotary Club in Chaffee, the park board, the Chaffee School Board, a former assistant fire chief, and was a charter member of the Booster Club and Band Booster Club at Chaffee High School. They moved back to Jackson in 1983. He belonged to the Southwestern Bell Pioneer Group, was a member of the Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post No. 158 in Jackson and was an avid Jackson girls and boys basketball fan. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and being outdoors.
Loving survivors include his wife, "Babe," of 56 years; two daughters, Nikki Jo (Kurt) Biler of Whitewater, Mo., Susan (Dan) Daugherty of Shawneetown; a brother, Harold G. Grant of Columbia, Mo.; a sister; Aletha L. (Don) Brown of Jackson; three grandchildren, Grant Biler, Kyle Daugherty, Adam Daugherty; and a great-granddaughter, Lillian Daugherty.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Grant.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Sam Roethemeyer officiating.
Interment will follow in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson, with military honors.
The family suggests that memorials be made to Emanuel United Church of Christ in Jackson or a charity of your choice.
