Grojean, Charles W. "Sonny"

The funeral for Charles W. "Sonny" Grojean, 82, of Cape Girardeau will be at 11 a.m. today at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, with military rites by VFW Post 3838.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of the funeral today.

Mr. Grojean died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at his home.

He was born April 25, 1921, in Dutchtown, son of Clyde A. and Mary Magdalene Logel Grojean. He married Vivian "Beeb" Schwartz Sept. 10, 1939, at Marble Hill, Mo. She preceded him in death Jan. 8, 1975. He later married Louise Bierschwal Aug. 23, 1975, at Gordonville.

Mr. Grojean performed various jobs in Missouri and Colorado before opening Cape Upholstery in 1960. He was co-owner of Cape Upholstery 25 years and was a meat cutter 25 years. He had worked for Vogel Grocery in Cape Girardeau and retired in 1984.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from April 10, 1939, to Oct. 19, 1945. He served in World War II, being sent to Iwo Jima along with the 5th Division Feb. 19, 1945. After two days of fighting, he was seriously wounded and was transferred to a hospital ship before returning home in late October 1945.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Grojean of Cape Girar-deau; a son, Kenneth C. "Butch" Grojean of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Karen Sue Bazzell of Cape Girardeau, Kay F. Hunter of Sikeston, Mo.; a sister, Patricia Ludwig of Cape Girardeau; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother.
