Hartman, James W.

James W. Hartmann, 92, of Gordonville was called to his heavenly home Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at the Lutheran Home.

He was born Feb. 25, 1918, at Whitewater, son of Charles and Rosie Baker Hartmann. He and Bernice I. Deneke were married Feb. 1, 1944.

James was a life member of Zion United Methodist Church near Gordonville, where he was a very active member and a member of United Methodist Men's Club. He served as lay pastor of Scopus United Methodist Church from 1983 to 1999, and was active in youth ministry.

He was also a member of Gideon International, former leader of 4-H and a Farm Bureau member. James farmed all his life on the family farm near Gordonville. He enjoyed his time as an auctioneer.

Loving survivors include his wife of 66 years; two daughters, Martha K. (Press) Berry of Cape Girardeau, Eileen (Paul "Butch") Meier of Jackson; a sister, Gladys Wedekind of Oregon, Mo.; two grandchildren, Brian (Paula) Meier of Jackson and Greg (Lesley) Meier of Orlando, Okla.; and two great-granddaughters, Josey and Gracyn Meier.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Hadley Hartmann, and two sisters, Stella Cook and Colista Thoma.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson, and from 1 p.m. to service time Sunday at Zion United Methodist Church.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the church, with the Rev. Ann Mowery and the Rev. Don Kuehle officiating. Interment will be in Zion United Methodist Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gideon International, Zion United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or the charity of your choice.
