Jones, Mildred Nellie (nee Hawn)

CRUMP, Mo. -- Mildred Nellie Jones, 92, a longtime Southeast Missouri educator, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at the Jackson Manor Nursing Home.

She was born July 20, 1909, in Oran, Mo., the daughter of Epps and Nellie Lutes Hawn. She and R. Glenn Jones were married June 23, 1945, in Herculaneum, Mo. He preceded her in death Sept. 18, 2001.

She graduated from high school in Lutesville, Mo., took her teacher's exam and began her career at Hog Creek School in Bollinger County at the age of 19. She later attended Southeast Missouri State University and earned her B.S. degree in 1960.

During her 43 years of service to education, Mrs. Jones also taught classes at Lone Oak, Crump, Council Ridge and Delta. She retired from Mary Maude Hosea Elementary School in Delta in 1975 after 16 years of teaching first-graders.

Mrs. Jones was an active leader of Bethlehem General Baptist Church in Crump, where she taught Sunday school and helped coordinate youth programs. She was also a member of the Star Homemakers Club, the Missouri State Teachers Association and served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross.

She is survived by a great-nephew, Jimmy Jones of Crump.

She was preceded in death by a nephew, David Clinton Jones; a great-nephew, Paul David Jones; two sisters, Eula and Mattie Jane Hawn; and an infant brother.

Friends may call at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson from 5-8 p.m. today.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 2002, at the funeral home. The Rev. Joe Allen of Bethlehem General Baptist Church will officiate, with burial to follow at Proffer Cemetery in Crump.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to the Bethlehem Church or to the Proffer Cemetery.
