Klaus, Irvin S., Dr.

Dr. Irvin S. Klaus of San Antonio, TX passed away peacefully in the Lord early Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at the age of 81. He was born December 20, 1929 in Seventy Six, Missouri, the son of August and Mathilda Mahnken Klaus. He attended Missouri University in Columbia and received a doctorate degree in Chemistry from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He was a retired chemist from the Monsanto Company in St. Louis, Missouri, instrumental in the development of Tylenol and acetaminophen. His education and career include membership in several social and professional organizations: Phi Eta Sigma (April 1955), Pi Mu Epsilon (Mathematics- May 1957), Phi Beta Kappa (November 1957), and Phi Lambda Upsilon (Honorary Chemical Society- May 1960). The American Chemical Society honored his distinguished career and his membership for 50 years of service. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving as a medic. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Martha Bagwell Klaus; one sister, Flora Hein (Washugal, WA); and one brother, Dr. Rupert Klaus (Murfreesboro, TN). Irvin is survived by his beloved wife, Grace Klaus of San Antonio, Texas; step-children, Charles Muckleroy of Fort Worth, Texas, Beverly Johnson of Boerne, Texas, and Marina Stanley of Littleton, Colorado; step-grandchildren, Michelle Abbott (WA), Savannah LaDuke (CA), Shane Hinkle (CO), and Sarah and Lydia Johnson (TX),; as well as seven step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Marie Anna Theiss of Perryville, Missouri and Elvira Roth of Wittenburg, Missouri; numerous nieces, nephews, their children, and many friends. Irvin was a loving, caring man; in many ways a gentle giant. Above all, his relationship with the Lord and his family were the most important things in life to this quiet, humble man. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, August 15, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes, Texas, 9944 Leslie Rd., San Antonio, TX 78254.
