Lohman, Virgil H.

Virgil H. Lohman, 81, of Jackson passed away Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at the Jackson Manor Nursing Home.

He was born July 25, 1924, in Friedheim, Mo., son of the late Oscar and Addie Klaus Lohman. He and Marjorie Ruehling were married Jan. 24, 1946.

Virgil served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1945 during World War II. He was awarded five bronze stars for participation in the campaigns of Normandy, North France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He also received a Purple Heart.

He worked for 48 years in commercial trucking. Initially he was self-employed, hauling livestock. He then worked for Jackson Oil Company and CO-OP, retiring in 1989.

Virgil was a member of the Altenthal Joerns American Legion Post 158 in Jackson and was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Pocahontas.

Loving survivors include Marjorie, his wife of 59 years; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Nelson Swan of Jackson; a grandson, Chris Buchheit of Jackson; two sisters, Erma Thomas of Perryville, Mo., and Stella Hahs of Jackson.

He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson. An American Legion Service will be held at 7 p.m.

Sunday calling hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the funeral home and after 1 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Pocahontas.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the church with the Rev. Bruce Ritter officiating. The burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. John's Lutheran Church, Southeast Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
