Marvin Ray “Jake” Maevers, 73, of Quartz Hill, CA. died peacefully at his home on October 5, 2012 following a short battle with Multiple Myeloma. Jake was the eldest son, born to Earl and Verna Maevers on May 18, 1939 in Cape Girardeau, MO. Together with his brother Butch and sister Lois, Jake was raised on a small family farm near the banks of the Mississippi River. He attended College High School in Cape Girardeau and graduated in May 1957. Following the move to California in 1961, Jake continued his education and received an Associate of Science Degree from Antelope Valley College and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from California State University Northridge. Jake also held a professional registration from the State of California as a Professional Civil Engineer and was one of the few remaining licensees in the State that was able to practice both Civil Engineering and Land Surveying under a single license. Jake was a devoted family man. He married Patsy Ruth Rushing of Chaffee, Missouri on July 3, 1959. Together, Jake and Pat raised three children, Kevin, Kimberly, and Kenton. In 1961, Jake and his family embarked on a journey to California and eventually settled in the Antelope Valley. Lancaster and Quartz Hill were Jake’s home for more than 50 years. Jake and Pat’s marriage lasted 38 years, but there was never any doubt that Jake and Pat were always friends, devoted parents, and grandparents. On October 13, 2002, Jake married Bobbie Edwards of Lancaster. Together, Jake and Bobbie made Quartz Hill their home and enjoyed nearly 10 years of married life together surrounded by a large, blended family. Throughout his life, Jake always possessed an entrepreneurial spirit and was continually expanding his knowledge and ability in business. Although Civil Engineering and Land Surveying have always been Jake’s passion, he also owned and operated a small vending machine route, co-owned the A.V. Skateway in Lancaster, and held a license as a General Contractor. But, Jake always came back to Engineering and Land Surveying. Throughout the course of his career, Jake worked for Caltrans during the design and construction of the Antelope Valley Freeway, held a position as a member of the engineering staff at the City of Lancaster, and acted as the Assistant Director for the Department of Public Works in Burbank, CA. After leaving public service, Jake founded J-K Civil Engineering with son Kevin in 1983. During the height of the building boom in the Antelope Valley during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, J-K Civil Engineering employed over 40 people in two offices. In 1994, Jake joined youngest son Kenton as a partner in Quality Surveying. During nearly three decades of private practice, Jake has been a part of the design, development, and construction of thousands of single-family homes, millions of square feet of office, commercial, and industrial space, dozens of schools, churches, and hospitals. Jake’s eye for detail, work ethic, and no-nonsense approach to engineering and land surveying made him one of the most respected professionals in the Antelope Valley and beyond. Beyond professional practice, Jake was a natural born leader, teacher, and an accomplished public speaker. He was always encouraging others to learn more, do more, and to become more than they were yesterday. He always found a way to bring out the best in others and encouraged asking thoughtful questions, practice critical thinking, and to always have a plan for personal and professional growth. Jake is survived by his wife of ten years Bobbie, and his children Kevin (Tamara), Kimberly (Mark), and Kent (Donna). He is also survived by his 6 stepchildren Kathy Riley (Bill), Dave Edwards (Kim), Cindy Crist (Marvin), Marianne Evans (Scott), Alan Edwards, and Bonnie O’Connor (Kelly). Grandchildren Ashley, Kagan, Tabitha, Erica, Rhianna, Holland, Milan and step-grandchildren Amy, Kyle, Kenny, Jennifer, Ryan, David and Matt. Jake’s survivors also include his brother Kenneth “Butch” Maevers (Kay) of Cape Girardeau, MO., sister Lois Maevers of Kansas City, MO., and his first wife, Pat Maevers. Finally, Jake is survived by a large extended family, dozens of loyal friends, and hundreds of people whom he touched with his warm sense of humor, infectious laugh, and the never-ending smile on his face. A public memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at Joshua Memorial Park, 808 E. Lancaster Blvd. Lancaster, CA. 93535. To honor Jake’s memory and legacy please consider a donation to the Antelope Valley Rural Museum (www.avmuseum.org) for the creation of an ongoing exhibit that will highlight the achievements of Land Surveyors, Civil Engineers, and Contractors. Please send your donation for the AVRM c/o the Maevers Family PO Box 1685 Lancaster, CA. 93539-1685 or donate to Hoffmann Hospice www.hoffmannhospice.org
