Mayfield, Mildred Louella (nee Seabaugh)
PATTON, Mo. -- Mildred L. Mayfield, 94, of Patton passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
She was born March 20, 1913, in the Mayfield Community in Bollinger County, Mo., daughter of Peter and Rosa A. Mayfield Seabaugh. She and Perry Jacob Mayfield were married May 5, 1935. He passed away Oct. 19, 1985.
Mildred graduated from Lutesville High School in Lutesville, Mo. She was the postmistress for the town of Mayfield, Mo., while her husband ran the general store. She was church clerk for Little Whitewater Baptist Church in Mayfield more than 50 years, during which time she played the piano and taught Sunday school.
At one time, she was at church three nights a week, went to school two nights a week, and worked a full-time job.
Mildred lived a long and active life; living on the family farm, canning the vegetables from their garden and beginning her extended education at the age of 40. She received a bachelor of science degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University and a master's degree in education from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
She taught in many Bollinger County schools, including James School near Scopus, Mo., and Mayfield, Mo., Conrad School in Sedgewickville, Mo., Bollinger School near Scopus and Patton School in Patton, retiring at the age of 67.
Loving survivors include a daughter, Linda (Albert) Zimmer of Patton; two granddaughters, Martha Zimmer of Patton and Sarah Zimmer-Masters of Perryville, Mo.; and a sister-in-law, Vera Seabaugh of Sedgewickville.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Grace Long and Lillian Seabaugh, and two brothers, Charles Seabaugh and Floyd Seabaugh.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson, and after 1 p.m. Sunday at Little Whitewater Baptist Church.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the church, with the Rev. Don Slatton officiating. Interment will follow in Pulliam Cemetery near Scopus.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Little Whitewater Baptist Church.
