Mayfield, Zelma R. "Tamp"
Zelma R. "Tamp" Mayfield, 94, formerly of Sedgewickville, Mo., passed away Friday, Jan. 28, 2011, at Life Care Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Oct. 14, 1916, in Mayfield, Mo., to W.D. and Hannah Green Mayfield. He was a graduate of Oak Ridge High School. He and Glenda Crites were married Oct. 12, 1940, at Armstrong, Mo. They resided the past few years in Cape Girardeau.
Tamp was an airplane mechanic in the U.S. Army, serving honorably during World War II from Sept. 10, 1942, to Oct. 18, 1945. For the battles and campaigns of Northern France and Normandy, he was awarded two Bronze Stars, a Meritorious Unit Service Plaque and a Good Conduct Medal.
Upon returning from his Army service, he worked many years at the former Loberg Garage in Sedgewickville. In the early 1970s, he established Mayfield Garage in Sedgewickville, and retired in the late 1980s.
Tamp was a baseball fan, and in his early years, was sought by many community teams for his pitching ability. He previously participated in league bowling at the Jackson Lanes, and enjoyed fishing. He and Glenda danced many years with the former Hilltoppers Square Dancers.
He was a member of Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 in Jackson and a lifelong member of Sedgewickville United Methodist Church.
Loving survivors include his wife of 70 years, Glenda; four children, Judy (John) Reilly of Cape Girardeau, Kay Waller of Cape Girardeau, Janet (the late Carl) Revelle of Jackson, Kenny Mayfield (Chris Cook) of Sedgewickville; a brother, Carl (the late Trula) Mayfield of Sedgewickville; and a sister, Faye (the late Charles) Owens of De Soto, Mo.
Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, Tyson (Angela) Mayfield, Josh (Erica) Mayfield, Ethan, Aaron and Nick Mayfield, Sherry (David) Landewee, Paul Pridemore, Jana (Gerald) Landewee, Kim (Jack) Thompson, Darin (Shannon) Revelle, Kelli Yount, Keith (Misty) Yount; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Earl (Viola) Mayfield; and a sister, Fern (Liston) Johnston.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson, and from 10 a.m. to the time of service Monday at the Methodist Church in Sedgewickville.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Greg Dowler officiating.
Interment will follow in Sedgewickville Cemetery with full military honors.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to Sedgewickville Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
