McCormick, Dorothy Marie (nee Monkiewicz)

Dorothy Marie McCormick, 88, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, July 18, 2010, at Ratliff Care Center.

She was born April 7, 1922, in Brooklyn, N.Y., daughter of Boleslaus J. and Leocadia Sienkowski Monkiewicz. She and Philip Benjamin Buchheit were married April 7, 1945, in Baltimore. Of this union were born nine children. She later married Charles E. McCormick on June 28, 1969. Both husbands preceded her in death.

Dorothy was a graduate of New Britain High School in Connecticut. She later attended Teachers College in New Britain. She was extensively active in the drama club in high school and later in the local New Britain Dramatic Club, playing lead roles in, among other things, "Joan of Arc" and "The Swan." She was also extremely gifted in music, studying piano.

Dorothy was a veteran of World War II, receiving an honorable discharge in January 1945.

Survivors include a son, Paul (Sherry) Buchheit of Glenallen, Mo.; seven daughters, Phyllis (Brian) Duschell of Jackson, Ellen Vaught of Greensburg, Pa., Cheryl Buchheit of Jackson, Laura Zimmerman of Tallassee, Tenn., Anita (Mike) Hartle of Jackson, Sandra (Steve) Ressel of Cape Girardeau, Karen (Rick) Schlosser of Scott City; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Connie (Richard) Bailey of Madison, Conn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Tracy Buchheit; two sisters; two granddaughters; and a grandson.

A public service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the chapel, with the Rev. Barry Pfanstiel officiating.

Ford and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Southeast Hospice.
