McMillan, Doris Evelyn (nee Niswonger)

Doris E. McMillan, 87, of Jackson passed away Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

She was born Jan. 11, 1926, in Jackson, to Harlan and Retta Marie Turner Niswonger. She was raised in Jackson and attended Jackson schools.

Doris was first married to Harold Hitt. They had two children, Ron and Bonnie. She and Melvin McMillan were married Nov. 22, 1976. He passed away July 11, 1984.

Before her children were born, Doris worked at the former International Shoe Factory in Jackson. She later worked more than 30 years at Southeast Hospital, retiring in December 2000 as supervisor of environmental services.

Doris was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Jackson and enjoyed singing in the JOY Choir. She was a former member of Zion Methodist Church near Gordonville. She liked to cook, quilt and embroider and especially enjoyed going to auctions.

Loving survivors include two children, Ronald C. (Linda) Hitt and Bonnie (Keith) Blechle of Jackson; two stepchildren, Marvin (Sharon) McMillan of Friedheim and Marcella (Bill) Meyer of Perryville, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Juanita Niswonger of Jackson; four grandchildren, James (Heidi) Hitt of Burfordville, Christa Hitt and Tara (Scott) Dameron of Jackson, Alissa (Tommy) Quaite of Charleston, Mo.; five stepgrandchildren, Tony (Shelly) Meyer and Valerie (Glen) Stueve of Perryville, Amy (Jared) Catoor of Festus, Mo., Jessica (Dan) Ponder and Jon McMillan (fiancee Jessica Drum) all of Friedheim; five great-grandchildren and another expected in June; and seven great-stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Hitt; a stepgrandson, Aaron McMillan; a brother, Dallas Niswonger; and her parents.

Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. today at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jimmie Corbin officiating. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to the Jackson Ministerial Food Pantry or Niswonger Cemetery.
