Meyer, Vesta Mae (nee Lange)

Meyer, Vesta Mae (nee Lange)

Vesta Mae Meyer, 97, of Jackson passed away Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, at the home of a daughter in St. Joseph, Missouri. She will once again be with Joe, her beloved husband of 72 years, who passed away Aug. 28, 2008.

She was born Oct. 9, 1916, near Millersville, to David and Carrie Estes Lange. She and Joe Lynn Meyer eloped July 13, 1936.

Vesta Mae was raised near Millersville and was a former member of Millersville Baptist Church. Upon joining New McKendree United Methodist Church after her marriage to Joe, she taught Sunday school many years and was always active in a circle group.

After graduating from high school, Vesta Mae taught school. After her daughters were well established in school, she began working in the meat department of the former Schaper's IGA Foodliner in Jackson. Her hands were never idle; she always worked very hard as a farmer's wife and was a wonderful mommy. She made the most incredible pies. She often called and visited shut-ins, crocheted many hanging towels, and put together countless jigsaw puzzles.

Vesta Mae and Joe were longtime faithful members of Eastern Star in Jackson, later transferring their membership to Oak Ridge.

Loving survivors include three daughters, Marilyn (the late Bill) Harrellson of St. Charles, Missouri, Darlene (John) Derr of St. Joseph and Diana Meyer of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Edna (Dale) Wolfenkoehler of Cape Girardeau; a sister-in-law, Beulah Lange; five grandchildren, Robb, Doug, Daina, Carrie and Sarah; 10 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and one expected in October.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a young grandson, Travis; two siblings, David Lee Lange and Tavia (Bill) Niemann; two young brothers; a young sister; and her parents.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Sunday at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson. There will be an Eastern Star ceremony at 11 a.m.

To celebrate the lives of both Vesta and Joe, there will be a joint ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jimmie Corbin officiating. Vesta's entombment will be at Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum in Cape Girardeau, where she will be laid to rest next to Joe.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to Oak Ridge Chapter 310 Order of Eastern Star or New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson.
