Myer, Betty J. (nee Birk)
Betty J. Myer, 79, of Jackson passed away Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2007, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
She was born Aug. 11, 1927, in Cape Girardeau County, daughter of Theodor C. and Adeline I. Bennett Birk.
The Birk family resided in Tilsit, where Betty was baptized Oct. 9, 1927, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church April 28, 1942. She was a 1945 graduate of Jackson High School.
Betty and Lee "Ebby" Myer were married June 10, 1950, in Poplar Bluff, Mo. He passed away March 25, 1956.
Her career began in 1975 at the old St. Francis Hospital's Mental Health Unit. In 1976 she assisted in moving to the new location. In 1997 she transferred to the Medical Records Department, retiring in 1997 with 22 years of service.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Concordia Guild, Sunday Morning Adult Bible Class, and the voters assembly. She was a former member of the Shut-in Visitors Committee, Altar Guild, Care Support Group, and was the first woman secretary of the voters assembly.
She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary 158 and the VFW Auxiliary, both in Jackson. She was a regular volunteer at the Red Cross Blood Drives and the Missouri Veterans Home, and previously received the Jackson Heritage Unsung Hero Award.
Loving survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael J. and Kathy Myer and their daughter Rachel, all of San Diego, Calif., John W. and Sylvia Myer of Springfield, Ore.; John's sons, Justin and Tyson of St. Charles, Mo., Jonathan of Cape Girardeau, and Sylvia's children, Joseph, Lee, Christina, Danielle, and Daniel; and two great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Kiersten.
Also surviving are four sisters, Evelyn Puls and Marjorie Grindstaff of Jackson, Doris Williamson of Herculaneum, Mo., Mildred Finley of San Diego; and a brother-in-law, Howard Reynolds of Sikeston, Mo.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Mark Myer; a brother, Jimmie C. Birk; and a sister, Mary Helen Reynolds.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson, and after 12:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Revs. David Johnson and Robert Henrichs officiating.
Interment will follow in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul School Operating Budget Fund.
