Niblack, Philip Marvin, Rev.

Rev. Philip Marvin Niblack, age 67 of Manchester, Mo., died unexpectedly Friday, August 28, 2009, at St. John's Mercy Medical Center.

He had dedicated his life to the Gospel and the Christian faith.

Rev. Niblack was ordained an Elder in the United Methodist Church in 1968, and served churches in Missouri for 37 years, including West Park-Gillum in Moberly and in St. Louis, Ellisville, Festus/Crystal City, St. Andrew (Florrisant) and Union United Methodist in south St. Louis. He retired in 2006, after a total of 41 years in ministry.

Youth ministry was a special interest leading him to serve as campus minister at Auburn University and direct many summer camps at Epworth-Among-the-Hills in Arcadia, Mo.

He recently penned "Trees Planted by the Waters," a novel set in southeast Missouri where he grew up.

He was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in St. Louis, Southeast Missouri State University, Vanderbilt University Divinity School (Master of Divinity) and Boston University (Master of Arts in Sociology of Religion and Social Ethics). He completed additional course work toward a PhD in Historical Theology at St. Louis University.

Rev. Niblack is survived by his mother, Marianna Montgomery Niblack of Jefferson City; his wife, Adele Niblack; his brother, William and sister-in-law, Ruth Niblack of Jefferson City.

He was the grandson of the late Rev. and Mrs. J.C Montgomery, son of the late Rev. Marvin Niblack, and nephew of Dr. J.C. Montgomery Jr. of St. Charles, all United Methodist ministers. He was also the grandson of the late William and Ethel Niblack, the nephew of Helen Niblack of Webster Groves and Mathilde Montgomery Najjar of Nashville, Tenn., and the uncle of Lisa Cashion Staib and Jeffrey Niblack.

Visitation for Rev. Niblack will be Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Bopp Chapel in Kirkwood from 2 - 4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. with the funeral service on Wed., Sept. 2, at 1 p.m. at Salem-in-Ladue United Methodist Church, 1200 S. Lindbergh. Burial will be at St. Paul Churchyard, 7600 S. Rock Hill Road.

Memorials may be given to the Rev. Marvin E. Niblack Memorial Scholarship Fund at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Mo. or a charity of one's choice.
