Niswonger, Glenn Owen
Glenn O. Niswonger, 90, of Jackson passed away Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born March 24, 1917, in Burfordville, son of Givens O. Niswonger and Marada K. Niswonger. He and Jean Fulbright were married June 10, 1942, in Joplin, Mo. She survives.
Glenn graduated from Jackson High School in 1936. During high school, he played on the 1934 basketball team, the only state champion basketball team that Jackson High School has ever produced. During his senior year, he played on the 1935 Jackson football team that went undefeated, and was never scored upon. He attended Southeast Missouri State University for a year and played on the school's football team.
He was inducted into the U.S. Army Nov. 24, 1942. At one time during his military career he was assigned to the security detail for Gen. George Patton. He was honorably discharged Jan. 3, 1946, as a sergeant.
Glenn retired in 1980 from the former International Shoe Co. in Jackson after working in the cutting room 40 years.
He and Jean moved to Florida in 1987 and returned to Jackson in 2001.
Glenn was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Jackson and a member of the Joy Choir. He was a former Sunday school teacher, a former Jackson school board member and a member of Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 in Jackson. He was ordained a deacon Oct. 23, 1983.
In addition to his wife of 65 years, loving survivors include a daughter, Brenda C. (Dr. Lou) Stalnaker of Pensacola, Fla.; a son, Douglas (Paula) Niswonger of Jackson; a brother, Woodrow Niswonger of Blue Springs, Mo.; three grandsons, Dax Davault, Ian Davault, and Dain Brinkman; and two great-grandsons, Dax Alan Davault and Jackson Davault.
He was preceded in death by a son, two brothers and three sisters.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Rob Hurtgen officiating. Interment will follow in Russell Heights Cemetery with graveside military honors.
Pallbearers will be Don Niswonger, Ron Hitt, Dave Turner, Dax Davault, Ian Davault, and Dain Brinkman.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Niswonger Church Cemetery Fund.
