Niswonger, Lloyd T.
Lloyd T. Niswonger, 87, of Cape Girardeau passed away Sunday, July 29, 2012, at Southeast Hospital.
He was born Jan. 20, 1925, in Cape Girardeau, to Ernest Truman and Clara Christine Haupt Niswonger. Lloyd and Lois L. Welch were married June 15, 1947, at Grace Methodist Church. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.
He was an active member in Boy Scouts. He joined Boy Scout Troop 7 at May Greene School in his youth. As an adult he joined Grace Methodist Sea Scouts. He was skipper for Explorer Ship 2 from 1952 to 1959, and assistant skipper in 1960.
Lloyd was a 1943 graduate of Central High School. He attended Southeast Missouri State University.
He was drafted into the Army in 1943 at Jefferson Barracks. He was at Camp Haan in California for basic training, and sailed aboard the SS President Johnson. He served in the New Guinea and Southern Philippines campaigns and returned to Camp Anza. He was discharged Jan. 12, 1946.
When Lloyd returned from the military, he was hired by the Missouri Department of Transportation as a draftsman. In 1965 he was promoted to district highway design engineer in District 10. He worked 42 years with MoDOT.
Lloyd was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He was a member of Food, Fun and Fellowship, and Thursday Senior Luncheon. He was head usher and kept the attendance count each Sunday.
Survivors include a son, Michael Niswonger; a daughter, Amy (Kevin) Cain; a sister, Dorothy Grebing; two grandchildren, Justin (Carrie) Cain and Rachel (Zack) Long; a great-grandson, Zander Cain, all of Cape Girardeau; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, on June 30, 2012; his parents; and a sister.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Tom Sullenger officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Grace United Methodist Church Memorial Committee or Boy Scout Troop 2 at the church.
