Niswonger, Marie Edna (nee Deneke)

Marie Deneke Niswonger died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau from Alzheimer's Disease.

She was born Aug. 4, 1922, at Gordonville, Mo., daughter of William A. and Pauline Nothdurft Deneke.

She married O. David Niswonger Jr. Aug. 1, 1948, in Gordonville, at Zion Methodist Church. They had three children: O. David III, Mary Dee and John W., who were all born Feb. 25.

David is married to Chris Wallach and they have two children, Lillian Jianglu and Carolyn Marie. They live at Fenton, Mo. Mary Dee is married to Richard Denning and they have a daughter, Katherine Marie. They live at Chesterfield, Mo. John is married to Lisa Messmer and they have two children, Joseph Myles and Kali Danielle. They live at Gordonville.

She received her undergraduate degree in elementary education from Southeast Missouri State University in 1949. She taught 27 years in Missouri at Clover Hill, Jackson, Mehlville, Lebanon, Poplar Bluff, and Franklin School in Cape Girardeau.

Marie was active in P.E.O. Chapter JN, and Women's Society of Grace United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School in the various towns in which she lived, and gave many book reviews, devotionals for her church and other organizations. In her youth she was president of the youth for the East Missouri Conference of the Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, Nelson, Roy and Orville.

Survivors include her husband; children; five grandchildren; a brother, Marvin Deneke and wife Mary; and a sister, Luella and husband Harvey Brase.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Funeral Home on Mt. Auburn Road from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11.

Funeral will be at Grace United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12. The Rev. Anselm Williams and the Rev. Howard Hardeman will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Methodist Church Cemetery at Gordonville.

Memorials may be made to Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation or Grace United Methodist Church Foundation.
