Overbeck, Bernice M. (nee Peetz)

Bernice M. Overbeck, 75, of Jackson, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2012, at Landmark Hospital in Cape Girardeau. She sustained extensive injuries in a car accident on August 20, and had been hospitalized since that time.

She was born August 23, 1937, in Tilsit, Mo., to Edwin and Emilie Voges Peetz. She and Wilford Overbeck were married March 3, 1957, at St. James Church in Tilsit. He passed away May 20, 1996.

Raised in the Tilsit community, Bernice attended school at the former Tilsit Grade School and then attended Jackson High School, graduating in 1955.

She worked 17 years at Southeast Hospital and was currently working part-time sitting with patients.

Bernice was a longtime member of Emanuel United Church of Christ in Jackson and a former member of St. James Church in Tilsit. She took great pleasure in helping others. Bernice and her late sisters were known as the “Singing Sisters,” and are remembered for singing at church and visiting local nursing homes. In recent years, Bernice volunteered at the Jackson Senior Center and enjoyed all kinds of card games, going to dances, and traveling with her many friends.

Loving survivors include two sons, Doug (Pat) Overbeck and their daughters, Kelsey and Lindsey, all of Pocahontas; Dwayne (Donna) Overbeck and their daughter, Dana, all of Jackson; a brother, Edwin “Jr.” (Elsie) Peetz of Jackson; three brothers-in-law, Edgar Moll of Jackson, Clifford (Shirley) Overbeck of Cape Girardeau, Weldon (Lois) Overbeck of Allenville, Mo.; four sisters-in-law, Evelyn Peetz and Dorothy Peetz both of Jackson, Wanda (Dean) Lacey and Ruby Propst both of Cape Girardeau; and many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and Wilbert Peetz; two sisters, Ruby Sander and Helen Moll; and a young brother, Eldon Peetz.

Friends may call Saturday, September 22, from 10 AM to time of service, at the McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson.

Funeral service will be Saturday at 1 PM, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Sam Roethemeyer officiating.

Interment will follow in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson. Memorials may take the form of contributions to the Emanuel United Church of Christ Memorial Fund.
