BONNE TERRE, Mo. -- Arthur Lee Poorman, 76, of Bonne Terre made his heavenly flight Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis.

He was born July 23, 1937, in Chaffee, to the late Elmer A. and Mima Lee Harmon Poorman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Delbert Poorman.

After graduating from Cape Girardeau Central High School, he attended the University of Missouri in Columbia on a football scholarship. Arthur married Shirley Vetter on Aug. 2, 1959, in Commerce. In addition to farming the family farm with his father for a number of years, he was a riverboat captain with ADM and retired in 1997.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Shirley; their son, Dr. Yancy (Cindy) Poorman and grandson, Kolten Poorman of Bonne Terre; and Arthur's daughter, Tammy (Sam) DeLeon and granddaughter, Samantha DeLeon of California. Also surviving are his two sisters, Joyce Sander of Commerce and Mary Young of Scott City.

Besides his love for his family, Arthur loved to travel and the sport of baseball, in particular, watching his grandson, Kolten, play. However, his greatest passion was witnessing to others about the gift of salvation through his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at the C.Z. Boyer and Son Funeral Home in Desloge, Mo., with the Rev. Derrick Meek officiating. Interment will be in the Bonne Terre Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the New Life Evangelistic Center in St. Louis.
