Puls, Van H.
Van H. Puls, 63, of Naples, Fla., formerly of Jackson, passed away Monday, April 30, 2012.
He was born June 23, 1948, to Edwin R. and Evelyn Birk Puls. He and Patricia Wulff were married Nov. 16, 1968, in Creve Coeur, Mo.
Van graduated from Jackson High School in 1966, and attended Southeast Missouri State University while serving in the National Guard.
He was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in 1962. He was an Eagle Scout and later served on the executive board of the St. Louis Area Council for the Boy Scouts of America, as well as Southeast Missouri Boy Scout Eagle Board of Review and as chairman of the Boy Scout Sustaining Membership Enrollment.
Van began working at Cape County Savings Bank in 1973 and eventually became president and chief executive officer. By the time he retired in 1995, Van had taken a single bank in Jackson and turned it into a multibank holding company with banks located in Cape Girardeau, Sikeston, Perryville, Springfield, Branson, Columbia, Clayton, and South County St. Louis in Missouri, as well as in Jonesboro, Ark. He brought Capital Bancorporation public in 1991 where the stock traded on the NASDAQ before being acquired in 1995.
In addition to his banking career, Van was an avid golfer -- a seven-time club champion in Naples. He served as president of Kimbeland Country Club and on the board of governors of Cape Girardeau Country Club.
He served as president of Saint Francis Medical Center Foundation, president of Jackson Industrial Development Co., chairman of Jackson Community Chest for United Way, president of Tri-County Banker's Association, chairman of the American Revolution Bicentennial Committee, member of the Board of Directors of Jackson Chamber of Commerce, member of the Board of Directors of Family Learning Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri State Treasurers Investment Advisory Committee and Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Shannon and Drew; a daughter-in-law, Sarah; and six grandchildren, Miles, Gage, Megan, Addison, Cole and Ethan.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Russell "Eddie".
