Sample, George David
George David Sample, 72, of Charleston, S.C., beloved husband of
Jacqueline Harris Sample, entered into eternal rest Saturday, March 13, 2004.
Mr. Sample was born July 24, 1931, at Sedgewickville, Mo., son of William Rudolph and Reva
Genora Niswonger Sample.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1952.
Following his military service, Mr. Sample earned a degree in chemical engineering from
the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy at Rolla, and completed graduate
studies at the University of Texas and the University of South Carolina.
After holding positions as chemical engineer with Texaco Research in Port Arthur, Texas,
and Richmond, Va., Mr. Sample was chairman of the Department of Chemical Engineering and
Radiochemistry at Trident Technical College. He was founder of General Engineering
Laboratories in Charleston, S.C.
He retired from the U.S. Department of the Treasury and was currently affiliated with
Prudential Carolina Real Estate.
Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Sample was a registered professional engineer (P.E.)
and registered land surveyor in South Carolina, licensed pilot, licensed realtor and
published author. He was a member of Mensa, Civil Air Patrol and an avid oenophile.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Alicia Ann Baker-Sample of Raleigh, N.C., Karen
Lee Sample Grimball of Charleston, S.C., Sandra Sue Smith of Fort Drum, N.Y.; two sisters,
Marjorie Swan of Pocahontas, Shirley Young of Scott City; two brothers, Eugene Sample of
Cape Girardeau, Roger Sample of Charleston, S.C.; and four grandchildren, Marissa, Marie,
Meagan and Shawn Smith.
The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Sample are invited to attend the memorial
service of the former in the J. Henry Stuhr West Ashley Chapel at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Interment will be private.
Friends may call at the chapel Wednesday from 1 p.m. until time of service.
