Schaefer, Roy L.

Roy L. Schaefer, 80, of Snyder Village in Metamora and formerly of Washington, IL, died at 10:03 pm Monday, May 10, 2010 at Snyder Village in Metamora, surrounded by his family.

Born on May 28, 1929 in Scott City, MO to Lawrence and Matilda Schaefer, he married Agnes L. Blattel on July 12, 1952 in Oran, MO. She survives.

Also surviving are 6 children, Carolyn Schaefer of Peoria, IL, Roy (LuAnn) Schaefer Jr. of Florence, IN, Bettina (Randall) Foster of Mapleton, IL, Richard (Michelle) Schaefer of East Peoria, IL, Anthony (Kristy) Schaefer of North Pekin, IL, and Paula (Anthony) Mooney of Hanna City, IL, 2 sisters, Rose Marie (C.A.) Baugus of Cape Girardeau, MO and Dora Koehler of Jackson, MO, 6 grandchildren and 4 great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 6 brothers and sisters.

Roy was a US Navy veteran serving on the USS M.C. Fox from February 20, 1948 to February 15, 1952. He worked as a truck driver, retiring from NE Finch in 1992. He also drove trucks for Texaco, was an independent truck driver, and was a member of the Teamsters Union. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus Fr. John Menco Council #6707, and the Spaulding Council in Peoria. Roy was a respected member of the Northern Tazewell Fire Department in Washington for over 21 years.

A funeral mass for Roy will be at 10 am Saturday, May 15, 2010 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington, where Father Joseph P. Donton will officiate. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm Friday, May 14, 2010 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington, where the Prayer Service will be at 6:45 pm Friday.

Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery in Washington, where military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Navy.
