Scherer, Opal Marie (nee Koehler)

Opal Marie Laurentius-Scherer, 83, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011, at Southeast Hospital.

She was born April 28, 1927, in Jackson, daughter of Henry Clemence and Mary Belle Baugh Koehler. She and Tony Laurentius were married Feb. 6, 1946. He died Aug. 19, 1988. She later married Cyril Scherer Oct. 8, 1994. He died May 3, 2007.

Opal was a machine operator many years at Lee-Rowan Co. in Jackson. She was a former member of Immaculate Conception Church in Jackson and St. Ann's Sodality. She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral in Cape Girardeau and of the St. Mary's Cathedral Council of Catholic Women; Knights of Columbus Auxiliary 6405, serving as president from 1992 to 1994; and Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Auxiliary Post 158 in Jackson.

Survivors include a son, C.W. (Barb) Scherer of St. Louis; a daughter, Suzy (Sashi) Glasscock of Cape Girardeau; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cracraft-Miller Funeral Home in Jackson. Parish prayers will be at 7.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Cathedral, with the Rev. Tom Kiefer officiating. Burial will be in Jackson City Cemetery.
