Seyer, Joseph A.

Joseph A. Seyer, 80, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, May 6, 2013, at his home.

He was born July 23, 1932, in Cape Girardeau, to Joseph John and Pauline Josephine Dohogne Seyer. He and Frieda Barbara Brockmeyer were married Oct. 22, 1955, in Cape Girardeau.

Seyer was in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955 and served on the carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt.

He was a truck driver in his father's family livestock business, Joe Seyer & Sons Livestock & Trucking. He also was a truck driver for Central Packing for 13 years and Elfrink Truck Lines for 14 years. He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral and Knights of Columbus Council 1111. He enjoyed playing cards, raccoon hunting and watching sports. He was an avid New York Yankees fan and loved Merle Haggard music.

He is survived by his wife, Frieda; eight children, Beverly (Jerome) Essner of Kelso, Mo., and their children, Scott (Sarah) Essner of St. Louis, Amy (Ryan) Mattes of Kelso, Neal (Melissa) Essner of Dubuque, Iowa, Renee (Matt) Scroggins and Kyle Essner of Kelso; Walter (Kathy) Seyer of Kelso and their children, Adam (Valerie) Seyer of Scott City, Keith Seyer and Stacey (Derek) Welter of Kelso, Mo.; Jeff Seyer of Edwardsville, Ill., and his children, Aaron and Nick Seyer; Ken (Debbie) Seyer of Jefferson City, Mo., and their children, Matt and Mackenzie Seyer; Chris (Joni) Seyer of Kelso, Mo., and their children, Jacob, Taylor and Jordan Seyer; Roger (Kari) Seyer of New York and their son, Declan; Steve (Jane) Seyer of Shelton, Conn., and their children, Lydia and Isaac; and Teresa (Scott) Givens of Cape Girardeau and their children, Allie, Evan, Jenna and Michael; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, the Rev. James A. Seyer and Vincent (Louise) Seyer of Cape Girardeau; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Seyer of Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Pauline Seyer; five brothers, Mark, Oscar, Brother Clarence, the Rev. Francis and Thomas; four sisters, Sister Adelma, Sister Clovis, Irma Lappe and Delphine "Teenie" Longinette; and a daughter-in-law, Becky Seyer.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Funeral Home. Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m. with Knights of Columbus rosary immediately following.

Funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Cathedral, with the Rev. James A. Seyer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Full military rites will be provided by Missouri Honors Team.

Memorial contributions may be given to St. Mary's Cathedral, Notre Dame Regional High School or Southeast Hospice.
