Skaggs, William Carl

William Carl Skaggs, 85, of Jackson died Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Capetown Assisted Living in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Feb. 26, 1923, at Patton, Mo., son of Harry Everett and Ella Mae Cook Skaggs. He and Sadie Grace Melton were married Nov. 10, 1947.

Skaggs had worked as a maintenance mechanic for Young Metal in Granite City, Ill., and with Jackson School District. He became a master Mason in November 1962 at Ionic Lodge in Desloge, Mo., and was a member of Mount Auburn Christian Church in Cape Girardeau.

He was a corporal with the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Tunisia in North Africa.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert Skaggs of St. Louis; a daughter, Kathy Schmid of Jackson; a stepson, Don Tune of Freeport, Ill.; three sisters, Rose Campbell of Edwardsville, Ill., Mary Beck of Desloge, Mo., Helen Dunham of El Paso, Texas; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to service time Thursday at Liley Funeral Home in Patton.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Dr. Wes Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Patton Cemetery at Patton.
