Slinkard, Jeryl Wilson

ORAN, Mo. -- Jeryl Wilson Slinkard, 71, of Oran passed away Monday, June 2, 2014, at the family home in Oran, after fighting a courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was born July 15, 1942, in Randles, to Hubert Wilson and Eva Evelyn Mobley Slinkard. He and Beverly Dawn Roberts of Oran were married Aug. 4, 1961.

Jeryl graduated from Delta High School in 1959.

He was a cutter at Florsheim Shoe in Cape Girardeau; worked at General Motors in Kansas City, Kansas, from 1962 to 1973; and in 1979 was a union representative with United Shoe Workers. He retired from UNITE in 2000 after serving as manager of the Cape Girardeau District. He also was a manager for the southwest region in St. Louis, which included Southern Illinois, Kansas and Kentucky. After retiring, he worked several part-time jobs just to entertain others and himself. Jeryl was a member of Cape County Cowboy Church in Oak Ridge.

He enjoyed traveling, having been to 46 states, Canada and Mexico. He also liked studying genealogy and American history. Most importantly he loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Dawn of the home; two daughters, Cheryl Slinkard (Dennis Summers) of Yorba Linda, California, and Kandy (Rob) Schlitt of Jackson; three grandsons, Ryan Ross, Quentin Valencia and Connor Schlitt; a brother, Paul David (Cindy) Slinkard of Jackson; two nephews, Ben and Luke Slinkard; a brother-in-law, Paul Douglas Roberts of Oran; and a sister-in-law, Alma (Wayne) Hopper of Redondo Beach, California.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Kenneth and Gerry Slinkard.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. Friday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Oran.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel, with the Rev. Doug Sikes officiating. Burial will be in Friend Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Southeast Hospice, 10 Doctors' Park, Cape Girardeau, MO 63703.
