Smith, Doris (nee Eakins)

Smith, Doris (nee Eakins)

Doris Smith, 78, of Gordonville stepped into the arms of Jesus, her Savior, on Tuesday, June 21, 2011. She is now experiencing what we are anticipating.

She was born Sept. 28, 1932, near Burfordville, to Troy and Maine Slinkard Eakins. She and James E. Smith were married Oct. 16, 1950.

Doris was very active at West Side Church of God in Cape Girardeau. In addition to serving as a Sunday school teacher and youth leader, she was active in the missionary society, choir and enjoyed helping wherever there was a need.

She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, traveling and collecting rocks along the way. Doris loved people and truly enjoyed the times her friends would gather around her piano and sing, and especially the fellowship and treats that followed. In later years she took pleasure in sitting on the back porch feeding and watching the squirrels and birds. Everyone who knew her loved her.

She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, James; a daughter, LaReesa (Rolf) Hanusa of Georgetown, Texas; a son, Rodney (Judy) Smith of Jackson; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and five brothers.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jeremy Clayton officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.

Memorials may be made to Southeast Hospice.

The family would like to express thanks to Southeast Hospice for the compassion and loving care during the last months of her illness, and are also very grateful to a faithful friend, Thelma Williams, who lovingly helped to meet her every need and provide for her comfort.
