Smith, Mary Louise (nee Poe)

Mary Louise Smith, 98, of Jackson died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at Jackson Manor Nursing Home after a brief illness.

She was born April 29, 1915, in Jackson, to Jesse Marvin and Lula Maude Cavaner Poe. Mary and John R. Smith were married Jan. 4, 1936. He died March 8, 2007.

Mary worked at International Shoe Co. in Jackson a number of years before opening and operating Mary's Daycare 29 years in Jackson.

She had been a member of New McKendree United Methodist Church since 1922. Mary was a member of Esther Circle and Iris Society, and had been a den mother and Bible schoolteacher. As a natural and gifted piano player, Mary shared her talent playing at nursing homes and for the Iron Mountain Railway.

Mary loved gardening, crossword puzzles, reading, crocheting, travel and letter writing. She had a special interest in the history of Jackson. Many individuals would contact her with questions regarding the town she loved. Her love, wit and caring, sharing ways will be sadly missed.

She was the dear mother of Mike (Martha) Smith of Jackson and Tim (Sue) Smith of Ellisville, Mo.; loving grandmother of Deanna Bender, Stacie Smith, Karmon Stanley, Chris, Anthony and Spencer Smith, Thresa Roberts, Bill and Pete Goehman; dear great-grandmother of 12; great-great-grandmother of one; an aunt, cousin and friend.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 71 years; a sister, Betty Garratt; and brothers Pete and Bill Poe.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at Cracraft-Miller Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jimmie Corbin officiating. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to New McKendree United Methodist Church.
