Statler, Elvin Hirschel

E. Hirschel Statler, 85, of Jackson passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at his home.

He was born Nov. 20, 1923, in Cape Girardeau, son of Louis and Emma Conrad Statler. He and Shirley Smith were married Aug. 29, 1948, in Jackson.

Hirschel was a Jackson High School graduate. He was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corps on Jan. 26, 1943, and was honorably discharged Oct. 23, 1945.

He worked seven years at Statler Construction in Jackson and more than 30 years in food service -- 27 years with Gerber Baby Food, retiring in 1984.

Since his retirement, Hirschel's hobby was dealing in antiques and collectibles. He was a member of New McKendree United Methodist Church for many years, serving on the church board, finance committee and building committee. He was a charter member of Jackson Jaycees, Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158, VFW Post 10495, and was a former president and member of the Optimist Club, all of Jackson.

Loving survivors include his wife, Shirley, of 60 years; a son, Mark D. Statler of Jackson; and a sister, Mysie Keene of Jackson.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Joe Scott Statler; three brothers; and two sisters.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. John Rice officiating. Interment will follow in Cape County Memorial Park with military honors to be provided.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson, Emanuel United Church of Christ or the charity of your choice.
