Statler, Erma Leona

Erma Leona Campbell Statler, 98, of Jackson died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007, at Chateau Girardeau Health Center in Cape Girardeau.

She was born April 19, 1909, in Paisley, Fla., daughter of Lawrence Mason and Julia Henrietta Call Campbell. She and Judge W. Osler Statler were married July 10, 1936, in De Land, Fla. Judge Osler Statler died in 1979.

She received an associate degree from Florida State University in 1927, receiving her teaching certificate in 1930. She received a bachelor of science degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University in 1959.

Statler taught at schools in Seville and De Land, Fla., and was a second-grade teacher 15 years with Jackson School District. She was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church in Jackson and was a soloist in the choir. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, charter member of DAR, DAC, Heritage First Families of Massachusetts, ADK teachers sorority and Kimbeland Country Club.

She was a basketball letter recipient at Florida State in 1927. She was classically trained in opera and sang the lead in the opera "Mikado."

Statler was a first cousin of Walt Disney. She was an avid bridge player, and traveled around the world in 1965. She wrote the official city song of Jackson and was a published poet.

She was a soloist with Jackson Choral Club, Schubert Choral Society and WRUF Radio Station in Gainesville, Fla. She was a past president of Jackson PTA, CTA, American Legion Auxiliary in Jackson and a 50-year member of Eastern Star.

Statler was a member of Missouri State Teachers Association Legislative Committee and Source of Revenue Committee, delegate to Gov. Dalton's State Conference on Performing Arts, and delegate to Gov. Hearnes' State Conference on Education.

Survivors include two sons, Judge Peter (Dr. Judy) Statler of Jackson, William O. (Dr. Carolyn) Statler Jr. of Scotia, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Dr. Matthew (Dr. Roxanna) Statler of Brooklyn, N.Y., and child, Roya; attorney Travis (Tania) Statler of Cape Girardeau; attorney Daniel Statler of Cape Girardeau; Stephen (Kelly) Statler of San Francisco, Calif., and children Nina and Collin; Kristina (Tom) Talbot of Maui, Hawaii, and children Orion, Sunny and Clay; and Timothy (Francesca) Statler of Oakland, Calif., and child Will.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Leslie and Raymond; and two sisters, Irene and Leila.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. to service time Sunday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Grant Gillard officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.
