Stubbs, Marlene (nee Mirly)
CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Marlene Stubbs, R.N., 81, of Chaffee passed away Tuesday May 12, 2009, at Village Care Center in Lee's Summit, Mo.
She was born Oct. 23, 1927, in Chaffee, Mo., to the late Frederick Martin Mirly and Mamie Mayovah Luper. She and James M. Stubbs were married Feb. 14, 1948.
Marlene was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chaffee, where she was a lifelong member. She was treasurer of the St. Paul Ladies Aid for over 50 years, as well as a longtime Sunday school teacher.
She joined the World War II U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps following high school graduation in 1945 and completed her R.N. training at Jewish Hospital in St. Louis in 1948. She was a member of the Missouri Area Health Care Education Association and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. She was employed by Chaffee General Hospital for 15 years.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion in Chaffee and of the Le Bonheur Club, a social-service organization. She was a volunteer nurse at Missouri Girls State for many years.
As a lifelong learner, she enjoyed meeting people and exploring new places. She and her husband traveled extensively and attended 49 Elder Hostel programs.
Survivors include three children, James M. Stubbs Jr. and wife Jean of Lee's Summit, Steve Stubbs and wife Alisa of Champaign, Ill., Melinda LeFevre and husband Lance of Lee's Summit; two sisters and a brother, Mayovah Ludwig of Cape Girardeau, Marvin Mirly of Chaffee, Mo., Marietta Lee of Huntington Station, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Kristen Stubbs and husband Colin McMillen of Pittsburgh, David LeFevre and wife Kindra of Kansas City, Mo., Kaci Stubbs of Portland, Eric LeFevre of Lee's Summit and Melissa LeFevre of Lee's Summit.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years and an infant brother.
Friends may call after 4 p.m. Wednesday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chaffee, with the Rev. Wayne Schwiesow officiating.
Interment will be in Union Park Cemetery in Chaffee.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saxony Lutheran High School or The Smile Train, an international organization that treats cleft palates and lips in children.
